Simon Yates threw Bury into the spotlight last week when he won the title of World Points Champion. The 20-year-old had fans on the edge of their seats when he dramatically stormed to Gold at the World Track Championships in the Belarus capital of Minsk,earning himself the rainbow jersey. The Bury Clarion member, riding for Great Britain, later went on to win 11th place in the Madison race along with 19-year-old Owain Doull from Wales.
Back at home, Geoff Downs and Paul Whatmough were competing at the Manchester Velodrome in the ACT track league, where Whatmough won the elimination race The Devil Takes The Hindmost. Later, Downs and Whatmough, Riding in groups one and two respectively, correspondingly finished the 12-lap scratch race in 3rd and 2nd place. Downs, won another 3rd place in the 30-lap points race, whilst Whatmough went on to to win 2nd in the 12-lap Course De Primes.
