Two of us set out myself and a gent I had never met before called Jim, we headed over Darwen to Blackburn, meeting and riding with Geoff Smith of Geoff Smith Cycles up to Whalley, where we turned for Mitton a slight deviation and improvement on my normal route into Clitheroe and one I had forgotten about, so thanks to Jim for reminding me of this entrance to the Trough.
We then went through Bashall Eaves where we bumped into a running race which was excellent to watch and support as we carefully made our way in the opposite direction along the course. We then headed through Whitewell for lunch at the puddleducks cafe at Dunsop Bridge, which had a roaring fire and was packed with cyclist. We shared a table with a cyclist from Preston for half our meal and then another two from Preston for the second half.
We then made our way on our return journey over Waddington Fell from Newton, ie in my opinion the steep side though neither are easy. It’s fair to say that the fell took its toll on Jim’s legs but he perceived through Clitheroe and Whalley but stopped at Blackburn for a refuel of Tea and a Mars bar. We then made our way back to Bull Hill and Darwen. A wonderful ride today in an area which is one of Jim’s and my personal favourites, in weather which was 5 degrees and sunny all day, with a slight headwind only at times to contend with.
