This week we welcome Declan Brady as a new member. Declan is currently
proving to be one of our most enthusiastic supporters of our weekend rides.
He was out on the usual 30 mile flat circuit Horwich/A6 ride last Saturday
then he and Mike Smith another recent joiner continued with a 20 mile scenic
hilly ride taking the Ashworth Valley route for the climb towards Knowl
Hill. Then it was eastwards to Ramsbottom and the ascent of the Rake. There
may be some ulterior motive in including this very demanding climb. Hill
climbing was not over yet as the ride continued through Hawshaw for the
ascent to Affetside. It is observed that the Rake is the hill for the
Classic Lancashire Road Club’s annual hill climb and the climb to Affetside
was the venue for Bury Clarion’s hill climb championships at the end of the
1960’s decade and into the 70’s.
Some of those out on Saturday’s ride were also out again on Sunday morning
for a 40 mile ride. After hard riding the previous day the average speed for
the ride into the ‘Forest’ of Rossendale dropped to below 16mph. Notably
the ascent of Deerplay Moor which is 1363 ft above see level meant the climb
from the lowest point on the ride was twice the height of Blackpool Tower.
