A good turnout of 6 people (myself, Dave Smith, Chris Taylor, Declan Brady and Liam Shaw and his Dad, Phil) started from Bury shortly after 9am with a hilly 60 miler on the cards. First up was Ashworth Valley road towards “Owd Betts” which saw Chris & Liam hit the climb hard and fast. This saw Chris disappear into the distance and Liam seeing his breakfast again!
After a re-group at the top we descended towards Edenfield and Rawtenstall with our next hill, Deerplay (Burnley Road East), soon dispatched thanks to a tailwind. Unfortunately JJ’s cafe was chock-a-block so, as a group, we decided to carry on towards Hebden Bridge for a bite to eat. In our way stood Long Causeway, the highest section of todays ride where, Liam “hill sprint” Shaw got his second wind with a few strong climbs towards the top.
The wind, from this point onwards, was strong and made for tiring cycling but the group worked well together, sharing time on the front.
We enjoyed lunch in Hebden Bridge before heading towards Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale, never an easy task with a howling headwind and a full stomach.
Towards home via Littleborough and Rochdale saw no real let-up in the wind. There were certainly some tired legs by the end of the ride.
A strong cycle by all in windy conditions.
